Julie Lee, who once raised campaign money for former Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, was sentenced Tuesday to one year and a day in prison for her July conviction on two counts of mail fraud and three counts of attempted witness tampering, according to U.S. Atty. McGregor W. Scott.

Lee, 62, was indicted in May 2005 on charges of misusing $125,000 in state grant money that was intended to help build a San Francisco neighborhood center. Through intermediaries, she donated the money to Shelley’s 2002 campaign for secretary of state. Shelley, a Democrat, resigned in February 2005 in the midst of investigations into his campaign finances.

According to prosecutors, Lee created false and misleading documents to hide her actions and tried to persuade three witnesses not to cooperate with federal investigators.
