Military deaths

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan or who died at a military hospital of their injuries:

erome C. Bell Jr., 29, of Auburn, N.Y.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Bell was killed Sept. 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in southwest Afghanistan’s Farah province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Thomas J. Brown, 26, of Burke, Va.; first lieutenant, Army. Brown was killed Tuesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire while on foot patrol in Salman Pak, Iraq, southeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.

Nathan M. Cox, 32, of Walcott, Iowa; staff sergeant, Army. Cox was one of two soldiers killed Sept. 20 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, east of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Bruno G. De Solenni, 32, of Crescent City, Calif.; captain, Army National Guard. De Solenni was killed Sept. 20 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Kandahar, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the Joint Forces Headquarters, Element Training Team in Salem, Ore.

Corry A. Edwards, 38, of Kennedale, Texas; chief warrant officer, Army National Guard. Edwards was among seven guardsmen killed Sept. 18 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed outside Basra, Iraq. No hostile fire was suspected. It was part of an aerial convoy from Kuwait to Balad, north of Baghdad. Edwards was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Daniel M. Eshbaugh, 43, of Norman, Okla.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Eshbaugh was among seven guardsmen killed Sept. 18 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed outside Basra, Iraq. No hostile fire was suspected. It was part of an aerial convoy from Kuwait to Balad, north of Baghdad. Eshbaugh was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade in Lexington, Okla.

Brandon W. Farley, 30, of Grand Prairie, Texas; staff sergeant, Army. Farley died Sept. 18 at Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul, of injuries suffered a day earlier when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in Able Monti. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Joseph F. Gonzales, 18, of Tucson; private, Army. Gonzales was one of two soldiers killed Sept. 20 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, east of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Joshua W. Harris, 21, of Romeoville, Ill.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Harris was among four troops killed Sept. 17 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Gerdia Seria, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery Regiment in Robbins, Ill.

Bruce E. Hays, 42, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; captain, Army National Guard. Hays was among four troops killed Sept. 17 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Gerdia Seria, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the Wyoming Joint Forces Headquarters in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Sidney J. Marceaux Jr., 69, of Beaumont, Texas; colonel, Army. A chaplain, Marceaux died Sept 14 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., from a noncombat-related illness. He had been serving at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, before he was transferred to the Warrior Transition Brigade at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Anthony L. Mason, 37, of Springtown, Texas; sergeant, Army National Guard. Mason was among seven guardsmen killed Sept. 18 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed outside Basra, Iraq. No hostile fire was suspected. It was part of an aerial convoy from Kuwait to Balad, north of Baghdad. Mason was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Mohsin A. Naqvi, 26, of Newburgh, N.Y.; first lieutenant, Army. Naqvi was among four troops killed Sept. 17 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Gerdia Seria, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Matthew J. O’Bryant, 22, of Duluth, Ga.; petty officer third class, Navy. O’Bryant was one of two U.S. troops killed Sept. 20 in a suicide truck bombing that killed 53 people at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan. A cryptologic technician, he was assigned to Navy Information Operations Command Maryland at Ft. Meade, Md.

Julio C. Ordonez, 54, of San Antonio; first sergeant, Army National Guard. Ordonez was among seven guardsmen killed Sept. 18 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed outside Basra, Iraq. No hostile fire was suspected. It was part of an aerial convoy from Kuwait to Balad, north of Baghdad. Ordonez was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Rodolfo I. Rodriguez, 34, of El Paso; major, Army. Rodriguez was one of two U.S. troops killed Sept. 20 in a suicide truck bombing that killed 53 people at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan. He was assigned to the 86th Construction & Training Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Brady J. Rudolf, 37, of Oklahoma City; chief warrant officer, Army National Guard. Rudolf was among seven guardsmen killed Sept. 18 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed outside Basra, Iraq. No hostile fire was suspected. It was part of an aerial convoy from Kuwait to Balad, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade in Lexington, Okla.

Matthew J. Taylor, 25, of Charleston, S.C.; staff sergeant, Army. Taylor was killed Sept. 21 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire while on foot patrol in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Polk, La.

Michael E. Thompson, 23, of Harrah, Okla.; corporal, Army National Guard. Thompson was among seven guardsmen killed Sept. 18 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed outside Basra, Iraq. No hostile fire was suspected. It was part of an aerial convoy from Kuwait to Balad, north of Baghdad. Thompson was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade in Lexington, Okla.

Robert Vallejo II, 28, of Richland Hills, Texas; first lieutenant, Army National Guard. Vallejo was among seven guardsmen killed Sept. 18 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed outside Basra, Iraq. No hostile fire was suspected. It was part of an aerial convoy from Kuwait to Balad, north of Baghdad. Vallejo was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Jason A. Vazquez, 24, of Chicago; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. Vazquez was among four troops killed Sept. 17 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Gerdia Seria, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion 122nd Field Artillery Regiment in Sycamore, Ill.
