A Lennox man was shot and killed in his car early Sunday near Western Avenue and 57th Street in South Los Angeles.

Authorities said Damien White, 19, was struck by gunfire while he was in driving his vehicle at about 1:10 a.m.

The car rolled to a stop at Western and Slauson Avenues, and White was pronounced dead at the scene, said Los Angeles police Department Officer Sam Park.

Park said White was a gang member, but one of White’s former Culver City high school football coaches, who kept in close touch with the onetime star wide receiver, said he was not affiliated with gangs and had made drastic changes in his life.

“It’s tragic,” said Greg Goodyear said. White “had really turned a corner,” he said.
