WORLD BRIEFING / IRAQ
TIMES WIRE REPORTS
An American soldier has been killed by an armor-piercing bomb south of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.
The soldier died when a so-called explosively formed projectile went off near the Shiite Muslim holy city of Karbala. U.S. officials have alleged that the projectiles, known as EFPs, are manufactured in Iran and shipped to Shiite militants, a charge Tehran denies.
At least 4,273 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to icasualties.org.
