For the first time, scientists have found common genetic differences that significantly raise the risk of stroke in the United States -- and they are found in millions of people.

Other stroke-related genes have been discovered, but none involved so many people.

The researchers found genetic variants on chromosome 12 near two genes that are implicated in stroke, one associated with blood pressure control and the other with brain injury repair.

The findings were reported Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.
