Five members of Congress and three activists were arrested on civil disobedience charges in front of the Sudanese Embassy for protesting “crimes against humanity” in Darfur.

The Congress members crossed a yellow police tape line and refused to leave the largely peaceful demonstration after calling on Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmed Bashir to reinstate 16 nongovernmental aid organizations that he expelled or shut down last month in response to the International Criminal Court issuing a warrant for his arrest.

The lawmakers, including Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma), were handcuffed and taken to jail. Each paid a $100 fine and was released within hours.
