Beware the ‘birthers’

Re “Speaking truth to the ‘birthers’ ” Opinion, July 31

It is bad enough that many in the lunatic fringe continue to harp on this issue of President Obama’s birth certificate. At the end of the day, I don’t think that any proof will satisfy these people, for the simple reason that this isn’t about facts -- it’s about their implacable animosity toward Obama.

Is it because he’s black, or a Democrat, or perhaps more liberal on some issues than they are? I don’t know, but the real issue is not Obama’s birthplace but their anger toward him.

They just can’t accept that this man is president of the United States.

I just want to say that Bill Maher’s article is the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time. It is witty, right-on and highly amusing. I couldn’t stop laughing. Thanks for making my day.

I do, however, take the essay’s message of warning seriously. Laughing hard gave me the chance to think about where this is coming from and where it’s going, and it seems to me that those who were really miserable, depressed and at a loss when Obama won can sit smugly with their success in the “birther” movement.

And that in itself is cause for concern.
