PRIME-TIME TV RANKINGS

The science fiction series “Defying Gravity” and the dating show “More to Love” became the latest summer premieres to draw lackluster viewership, while CBS and NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” again topped the prime-time television rankings.

ABC’s “Defying Gravity” drew 3.66 million viewers to finish third in its Sunday 9-11 p.m. slot and 62nd among prime-time broadcast programs from July 27 through Sunday.

Fox Broadcasting’s “More to Love” was fourth in its Tuesday 9-10 p.m. slot and 58th overall with 4.02 million viewers.

CBS had four of the seven most-watched programs to rank as the top network for the eighth time in the 10 weeks of television’s summer season, according to figures released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research. CBS averaged 6.24 million viewers for its prime-time programming.

A 1-2 finish by the week’s two “America’s Got Talent” broadcasts and an eighth-place finish by the rerun of the previous Wednesday’s episode helped NBC to a second-place finish, averaging 5.07 million viewers.

An episode of “America’s Got Talent” has been the week’s most-watched program five times in the six weeks it has aired this summer, with only Major League Baseball’s All-Star game interrupting that streak.

ABC got three boosts to its rankings thanks to the summer’s final week of “The Bachelorette.” The two-hour, fifth-season finale July 27 was third for the week with 10 million viewers, the series’ most-watched episode since the second-season finale on Feb. 25, 2004.

The TNT police drama “The Closer” was the week’s most-watched cable program, with 7.46 million viewers, which would have placed it 15th among the programs on the five major broadcast networks.

USA was the week’s most-watched cable channel in prime time for the third time in four weeks, averaging 3.55 million viewers. USA had each of the four most-watched prime-time cable programs after “The Closer”: “Burn Notice,” “Royal Pains” and the two segments of the World Wrestling Entertainment program “WWE Raw.”
