Sometimes the people who make a show, especially a long-running one, know when it will be ending [“Last Episodes, Lasting Impact,” Jan. 25]. Then they have the chance to tie up all the loose ends, bring closure to the fans. Unfortunately, a lot do not live up to the hype or they leave with even more things left to wonder about.

Sometimes they get it right, like “MASH,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “St. Elsewhere” and the 1960s version of “The Fugitive.” Still, no show will probably ever top the way “Newhart” ended. Now that was an ending.
