He’s good for more than a laugh

As the foremost Anglo-Indian comedian working today, you might expect Russell Peters to have a take on the breakout success of “Slumdog Millionaire.” And you’d be right.

“I went in with a little hesitation, kind of thinking, ‘Oh, great, another white guy making a movie about Indians,’ ” he said. “But it was just incredible, and you know what? It could have been set anywhere in the world and it would have worked because it had a great story. And right now, Freida Pinto must be the hottest woman on the planet.”

Peters isn’t doing too badly himself. His new comedy DVD, “Red, White and Brown,” was just released, and next month he returns as host of the Juno Awards, Canada’s version of the Oscars. He’ll be performing in L.A.-area clubs come April.

Weekends at Silver Spoon

On a nice weekend, I love going to breakfast at the Silver Spoon, a diner on Santa Monica just west of Crescent Heights. A comedian friend of mine who’s Greek took me there about three years ago because it was run by a Greek family. I’ve been going there almost religiously ever since. And I always get the same thing: an egg-white omelet with chili. On Saturdays, they have the very traditional Greek lemon soup, avgolemono.

After breakfast, I’m a big shopper, but anywhere I go, there has to be the cool factor, a unique factor. There’s a store called Selecta on Melrose that fits that bill. I get all my T-shirts there. There’s one I have from there that has a theme from “American Me,” the movie with Edward James Olmos. That’s high in my rotation.

Hike . . . or TV

I have a hard time getting myself motivated to work out, but if I can get going, I’ll do Runyan Canyon. I used to box some, and I still have a Slam Man that I punch. But now I just have people over when there’s a good fight on TV. Adam Carolla and David Alan Grier will show up whenever there’s a big fight. For food, I’ll just order from Shakey’s Pizza or KFC.

Il Sole to impress

I’m single. I’m as single as it gets. I’m not even dating anyone. But if I was taking someone out and I wanted to impress them, I’d go to Il Sole on Sunset. It’s dimly lit, and there’s always celebrities. And the food is so good. They have this appetizer that’s just burrata cheese with tomatoes, and it’s just delicious. I’d probably have the Dover sole for my main course. And I’d order the penne pasta for the table. And although I’m not even a tiramisu guy, the one there is just ridiculous.

Another place that’s fun and has good food is Kitano. They have the spicy tuna on crispy rice and a lot of cool dishes that are very tasty, and the vibe is very fun and lively and there’s a lot of hot chicks running around. And like Il Sole, you may see some people that you’ve seen in movies. Dan Tana’s is kind of special too, but it’s too tiny to just hang out there, because if you’re at the bar, you’re going to get bumped by everybody who walks past.

Can’t beat the ArcLight

For a little night life after dinner, I like to catch a concert at the House of Blues. Or maybe a movie at the ArcLight -- the seats are so comfortable, it’s just a great moviegoing experience. And I’m a big fan of good popcorn, and the ArcLight’s is great. I’m also at the Laugh Factory and the Comedy Store quite a bit. As for the L.A. club scene, it’s just so clique-y, I’d rather spare myself the aggravation.
