Mall will reopen in mid-2010

The Westside will have to wait a bit longer for its coastal shopping-mall fix.

The reopening of the reconfigured Santa Monica Place has been postponed several months to mid-2010 to coincide with the opening of a new Bloomingdale’s, one of the mall’s two department-store anchors.

The store will be modeled after the chain’s SoHo location, which is smaller than a typical Bloomingdale’s and more tailored to the market.

“Buyers for each store take a look at what people are actually wearing in the area,” said Ashley Walkley, marketing manager for Macerich, the mall’s owner. Bloomingdale’s will replace Macy’s, which is liquidating merchandise at prices reduced by 60% to 80%. Nordstrom, the other anchor, is slated to open later in 2010.

Macerich is transforming the formerly enclosed mall into an open-air retail destination with a rooftop dining deck, which takes advantage of ocean views. The design also aims to create a better connection with the Third Street Promenade.
