Former Mayor Marion Barry was admitted to Howard University Hospital for a kidney transplant scheduled for today.
The District of Columbia Council member, 72, has been beset by health problems as prosecutors are seeking to jail him on accusations of failing to file his 2007 tax returns.
Bernadette Tolson, Barry’s chief of staff, said he was in good spirits. The new kidney was reportedly being donated by a longtime friend.
