Rescuers on Thursday successfully airlifted a 7-year-old quarter horse out of a steep ravine in the Cleveland National Forest, where the animal had been trapped for six days.
The mare, Flicka, apparently tumbled down the 200-foot hillside after being taken on a multi-day backcountry outing by a friend of the horse’s owner, said John Welsh of Riverside County Animal Services.
When Flicka got stuck on an impassable section of trail damaged by recent storms, the handler walked out to get help. When he returned, Flicka was at the bottom of the ravine, in an area west of Interstate 15 near Indian Truck Trail, Welsh said.
The horse was pulled to safety about 1 p.m.
