Egypt police detain 350 protesters
Egyptian police have detained at least 350 members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood, the group and security officials said Sunday.
The detentions took place Saturday after a large protest in central Cairo organized by the Islamist group against the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.
A security source said the detainees were being held on suspicion of inciting demonstrations and membership in an illegal organization.
The Brotherhood is Egypt’s strongest opposition group and has historical and ideological ties with Hamas Islamists who rule Gaza. It said Saturday’s detentions brought the total number of its members held to more than 1,050.
The group has criticized the Egyptian government for not opening the Rafah border crossing with Gaza for normal traffic. Limited humanitarian operations have been allowed through.
Egypt says it would open the border for regular traffic only in the presence of the Palestinian Authority.
