Two state government officials whose wives own a Mexican day-care center where 44 children died in a fire say they are resigning from their posts to facilitate the investigation of the blaze.

Antonio Salido, finance director for Sonora state’s infrastructure department, says he has stepped down, along with Alfonso Escalante, the assistant secretary for livestock.

Salido says the day-care center strictly followed safety rules established by the Mexican Social Security Institute, which outsourced child services to them.

He says the day-care center in the northern city of Hermosillo, where the fire killed 44 children Friday, had three emergency exits.
