This McCourt may actually end up in Boston

Share

Way, way down in the depths of Thursday’s Major League Baseball draft is a name that resonates close to home.

Gavin McCourt.

The son of Dodgers owner Frank McCourt is a 5-foot-9, 160-pound outfielder from North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake High. He was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 39th round, the 1,188th player selected overall.

“I’m shocked,” McCourt told The Times’ Eric Sondheimer. “I didn’t see that coming.”

McCourt, who plans to attend Stanford and try to make the team during walk-on tryouts, was asked about contract negotiations.

“I don’t think Scott Boras would fit well into the family dynamics,” he replied. “I think I’ll let my dad represent me.”

Trivia time

Before buying the Dodgers, Frank McCourt unsuccessfully bid to own which major league franchise?

Hold the meat

How does a meatless cheesesteak sandwich sound right about now?

At Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park, it is one item on a menu that earned the stadium the top spot in PETA’s annual rankings of vegetarian-friendly ballparks.

Citizens Bank Park was also cited for its Southwestern black-bean burgers, mock crab cake salad and veggie hot dogs.

Neither the Dodgers nor the Angels cracked the top 10, though the Dodgers received honorable mention with their veggie burgers and dogs, California and cucumber rolls, fresh fruit skewers and roasted sweet corn.

Never too soon

It’s only June, but already New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan and Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder are doing what they can to fuel the Jets-Dolphins rivalry.

Crowder, to South Florida reporters: “Oh, he’s going crazy. He’s going absolutely nuts. I know it’s his first chance to be a head coach, and I know he’s excited about life. But I’ve never played a football game in June in my life. So congratulations to him. He’s the OTA [organized team activities] Super Bowl winner.”

Ryan, to New York writers: “I don’t know this Channing Crowder. All I know is that he’s all tatted up, so I guess I ought to be nervous about him. The other thing is, I think he’s wrong because I do think you win in June. I think you win with your preparation and all that kind of stuff. If I was younger, I’d probably handle him myself.”

Crowder, to the Miami Herald: “He says he’d take care of me if he was younger. I’d have beat the hell out of that big old joker. Or if he really wants to get retro, my daddy or my uncle could have handled him. Don’t get big. Win with preparation? Start watching some tape and learn who your rival is. Come on now.”

Trivia answer

The Boston Red Sox.

And finally

This year’s Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Birmingham features “Bear Country,” a play about legendary Crimson Tide football coach Bear Bryant that proved a hit during a recent five-week run in Montgomery.

“We had people tailgating,” title actor Rodney Clark told the Associated Press. “For a theater to have people tailgating, that’s a dream.”
