Aron Baynes scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, and Washington State never trailed in beating Oregon, 62-40, on Wednesday night in a first-round game of the Pacific 10 Conference tournament at Staples Center.

Baynes, a 6-foot-10, 250-pound senior from Australia, was seven for eight from the field and six for six from the free-throw line, and grabbed eight rebounds before leaving with 5 minutes 57 seconds left and the Cougars leading, 56-37.

The win was the fourth in the last five games for Washington State (17-14), which faces No. 15 UCLA (24-7) tonight in the quarterfinals.

The teams split their two games this season, with the second-seeded Bruins winning 61-59 in January and the seventh-seeded Cougars prevailing, 82-81, last month.

Tajuan Porter scored 20 points for 10th-seeded Oregon (8-23), which set Pac-10 tournament records for the lowest point total, lowest number of field goals (13) and lowest field-goal percentage (26%).

Porter, the only Oregon player to reach double figures, was five for 12 from three-point range, and the Ducks were seven for 28 beyond the arc and 13 for 50 overall.

Washington State shot 58.1% despite missing all six of its three-point attempts, and outrebounded the Ducks, 37-24.

Stanford 62, Oregon State 54 -- Anthony Goods scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half when Stanford rallied to win the first-round game.

Ninth-seeded Stanford (18-12) was making its first appearance in the tournament’s play-in game a year after losing to UCLA in the title game. It advanced to today’s quarterfinals against No. 13 Washington (24-7), the top-seeded team.

The eighth-seeded Beavers (13-17) swept Stanford in the regular season for the first time since 1992-93 and twice got to within one in the final 3:45.

But they missed some big free throws and failed to make a field goal in that stretch.

Lathen Wallace led the Beavers with a season-high 18 points.

They shot 39% from the field, well below their 46% season average.
