Re “Voting Rights Act out of date?,” March 18

Those who criticize The Times for ignoring Latinos need look no further for evidence than last week’s incomplete analysis of the Voting Rights Act. Nowhere mentioned is that Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act covers Arizona and Texas and parts of other states, including California, because of a history of electoral discrimination against Latinos.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund represents Latino residents of government districts challenging the Voting Rights Act’s constitutionality. It is unfortunate that The Times needs a reminder of our existence when Latinos constitute about half of the city’s population and have been here for centuries.
