Friday’s featured Calendar story [“Betting on the House” by Scott Collins, May 8] reads like a promotional infomercial, completely devoid of objectivity and the obvious.

Those saints and angels at HGTV “saw an opportunity amid the rubble of a crumbling economy to lend a helping hand to the middle class.” Too bad that hand is covered with grease and slime, feasting off the misfortune of others to line their pockets. Only the fact that HGTV “saw an opportunity” rings true.

Game shows featuring families down on their luck, fighting for a big cash prize that sends three of them back to the poor house, is sure to be a roaring good time. Let’s call it what it is: a viper pit that is descended from the Roman Colosseum’s reality series of “Lions vs. the Christians.”
