Times Wire Reports

A Darfur rebel leader appeared at the International Criminal Court in The Hague charged with war crimes in the killing of 12 African Union peacekeepers in 2007.

Bahar Idriss Abu Garda, the first rebel to be tried, has denied any role in the deaths.

He appeared voluntarily and he confirmed he had been told of the charges and was not asked to enter a plea.

Abu Garda, 46, chairman of the United Resistance Front, is accused with two other rebels of orchestrating what AU officials described as the worst assault on peacekeepers since the conflict began in 2003.
