Who ‘wins’ in emissions deal?

Re “Deal on car emissions a win for state,” May 19

The agreement on vehicle emissions may be a “win” for President Obama and advocates against global warming. But it is a definite “lose” for consumers who need or desire larger vehicles for their businesses and families.

Also in the “lose” category are those who believe in free markets and the scientists who offer evidence that human activity has nothing to do with the planet’s climate changes.

The government should not be telling carmakers what kind of cars they can build or consumers what car they should drive.

At a time when every political action should be analyzed for its effect on the economy, this agreement seems particularly reckless.

Obama should be applauded for bringing together leaders from the auto industry to environmentalists to craft a plan to raise fuel standards.

The plan has many benefits beyond saving people money on gas. We will be helping domestic automakers, as they will be making more efficient cars that will sell well, positively impacting the environment as well as helping to break our reliance on Mideast oil.
