Ooga Booga heads west to Keep Co.
Ooga Booga is a retail apparel store that doubles as an affordable art gallery, carrying items including clothing and accessories by Opening Ceremony and Slow and Steady Wins the Race, as well as pieces from well-known artists such as Mike Kelley, Ed Templeton and Terence Koh. The shop, open for almost six years, has become a beloved Chinatown destination known for its quirky merchandise and ongoing roster of events.
To reach out to those who don’t cross the 110 Freeway too often, Ooga Booga heads west to Fairfax Avenue, where proprietor Wendy Yao has opened a temporary mini-shop inside Keep Co.’s shoe store on Fairfax Avenue in time for holiday gifting, with most merchandise priced at less than $100.
The Ooga Booga holiday mini-store arty accessories, such as jewelry from Berlin’s cult brand Bless ($15 to $28) and backpacks from Sweden’s Fjallraven Kanken ($80). The store also features merchandise selected by Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who chose mix tapes by K Records’ Calvin Johnson, along with Opening Ceremony’s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, who picked ceramic apple pipes by artist Lisa Sitko ($80) and “Gore,” the book collaboration by the band Black Dice and Jason Frank Rothenberg ($45), respectively.
Other gift ideas include coffee table tomes, Ashley Thayer handmade quilts ($390) and Keep x Ooga Booga apricot-persimmon fruit preserves or pickles. Keep Shoes, which makes comfy women’s and kid’s shoes in eco-friendly fabrics such as bamboo, will be hawking new styles, including its Shaheen desert boot in silver and fold-over chambray Ramos boot (both $75).
“Keep is about family and working with the community,” says Una Kim, who founded the shoe brand three years ago. “Wendy and I have a history where we were both involved in the music and arts scene. And the holidays are about family, so we decided to bring her into the store.”
