Amazon.com agreed to pay $150,000 to settle a Michigan high school student’s claims that it wrongfully deleted electronic versions of George Orwell’s “1984” and “Animal Farm” from his Kindle reader.

The proposed class-action complaint, filed in July by Justin Gawronski, alleged Amazon.com didn’t disclose to Kindle users that it has the ability to remotely delete e-books purchased for the handheld device.

Amazon.com deleted some editions of Orwell’s novels from users’ Kindles two weeks before the suit was filed. It had learned that the books were being sold by a company that didn’t have the rights to them. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos apologized to customers the next week.
