Re “3 U.S. scientists share Nobel,” Oct. 6

The Times wrote about the awarding of Nobel Prizes in physiology and medicine this week. Three distinguished scientists who made important medical discoveries will now share a $1.4-million prize.

But isn’t there something a little ridiculous in calling attention to this “exceptional” award, one that these three scientists will likely enjoy once in their lifetime?

After all, thousands of traders on Wall Street got a greater bonus this year and probably many other years. For instance, tens of thousands of Goldman Sachs employees earned bonuses of several hundred thousand dollars on average.

What does that comparison say about the way our society recognizes people’s contributions of social importance?
