Worldwide shipments of personal computers edged back up in the third quarter, analysts said, a promising sign for the holiday season.

PC shipments had fallen in the first six months of the year as the recession inhibited spending by consumers and businesses. But analysts at IDC said shipments from July to September rose 2% from the same period last year. Consumers kept buying the laptops and netbooks that have been the industry’s bright spot.

IDC said such growth before the Oct. 22 launch of Windows 7 boded well for the fourth quarter and next year.
