A man was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of two men, one of them an abortion protester outside Owosso High School. Authorities said the suspect didn’t like that the activist carried a graphic sign depicting an aborted fetus in front of students.

Harlan James Drake, 33, shot James Pouillon, 63, in front of horrified students and parents shortly after 7:20 a.m., authorities said. Prosecutors said they didn’t know whether Drake knew Pouillon personally or only by reputation as a local protester.

After Drake left the school, he drove seven miles to the Fuoss Gravel Co., where he shot and killed an acquaintance, Mike Fuoss, 61, in his office, authorities said. They didn’t elaborate on how Fuoss and Drake knew each other.

Police arrested Drake at his home after tracing his vehicle license plate number.

Authorities said they believed that Drake intended to kill a third man who lived in Owosso but that they caught him first.
