Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the State Department are being sued by a diplomat who says she was discriminated against because of her age.

Lawyers for Elizabeth Colton, 64, filed suit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia alleging that Clinton and the department violated her rights by enforcing a mandatory retirement age and denying her a job at the U.S. Embassy in Algeria.

Colton says in court documents that she had accepted the two-year post as political-economic counselor in Algiers, but that the offer was rescinded when officials realized she was near the foreign service officers’ retirement age of 65.
