AT THE PLATE: On the first pitch of his first at-bat as an Angel at Angel Stadium, Hideki Matsui slapped a single past Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, scoring Bobby Abreu from second base. Matsui struck out in his other two at-bats. Kendry Morales scored on a Brandon Wood sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, and singled to score Michael Ryan in the ninth.
ON THE MOUND: Joe Saunders gave up four hits and two runs in five innings in his final spring tuneup. Reliever Michael Kohn hadn’t given up a run in eight spring appearances, but the Padres’ Kyle Banks spoiled his ERA with a three-run homer to left center in the sixth inning.
EXTRA BASES: Outfield prospect Michael Trout hit a home run and a double, and catcher Mike Napoli and outfielder Terry Evans each doubled in the Angels’ 7-6 split-squad exhibition victory over the Cleveland Indians in Tempe, Ariz., on Thursday.
UP NEXT: Ervin Santana will face the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw at 7 p.m. tonight at Angel Stadium.
