UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel breaks down scrimmage film

The game film from Sunday’s scrimmage gave UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel plenty of material for the locker room chalkboard.

First, the special teams unit had several lulls. “We need to make sure that never happens again,” he said.

Second, some players looked rusty at times while adjusting to new positions, such as Glenn Love, who switched from strong safety to linebacker this season. Neuheisel said that Love showed flashes of what he could do, but “it’s just making decisions faster.”

Then there’s Neuheisel’s new “pistol” (read: shotgun-hybrid formation, a la Nevada) offense, which at times hummed down the field and at others sputtered like an old Studebaker.

But after Monday’s practice, which was the Bruins’ last without pads, Neuheisel was encouraged. “I’m telling ya,” he said, “I think we have the makings of a good football team.”

Of particular interest is the new offense, which he calls “Revolver.” Sophomore quarterback Kevin Prince said most of its pass plays are in place and most of the run plays were installed Monday. “We’ve put in a decent amount of things to where we could call a full game’s worth of plays right now,” he said.

Neuheisel said they’ll continue to work with the offense because it’s worth “continued investment,” but that they’ll switch it up soon.

“We know what we know, so we can go back to the other stuff anytime, and we probably will … before spring is over just so our defense can look at some more conventional offense, which is certainly part of the Pac-10 scene,” he said.

Dye update

Junior strong safety Tony Dye missed practice Monday as a precaution after some testing revealed an irregular heartbeat that he said wouldn’t force him to miss considerable time.

“[Doctors] said it wasn’t anything serious at all, but of course they have to make sure,” Dye said. “But they said it shouldn’t be a big deal and that I should be on the field [Tuesday] if not [Thursday].”

He explained that part of the testing was because doctors were considering giving him Adderall for “some ADHD possibilities.” But Dye said he isn’t concerned about the results because doctors told him the symptoms were minor.

“And I know myself,” he said. “I’ve been running around here just fine, never had any heart problems in the past, so it should be easy.”

Neuheisel said he wasn’t worried. “He’s known about it for some time,” he said.

Quick hits

Tight end Joseph Fauria didn’t work out Monday because of a hip-flexor injury, Neuheisel said. Fauria, who suffered a groin injury early in spring camp, also pulled up lame after catching a 10-yard touchdown pass in Sunday’s scrimmage. But Neuheisel expects Fauria to return to practice by Thursday if not by Tuesday, as he does with linebacker Sean Westgate and cornerback Marlon Pollard. Westgate wore a red jersey (meaning no contact) during practice Monday because he had a stiff neck, while Pollard missed practice because of a hamstring injury.
