Google to sell TV ads for cable networks carried by DirecTV

Google Inc. will sell television spots for cable networks carried by DirecTV Inc., the Internet giant and the largest U.S. satellite television provider said Wednesday.

Google will sell advertising on networks such as Fox Business and Bloomberg TV, including during prime time. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Google, which dominates Internet advertising and earned nearly all of its $6.82 billion from such ads last quarter, is trying to expand into new markets. One of those markets is television advertising, which it has been attempting to penetrate for the last three years.

Its pitch: It can improve television ads for the consumers who watch them and the advertisers that buy them by targeting ads to specific audiences in a cost-effective way and at a scale that has never been done before.

Google, which has had an agreement with Dish Network Corp. since 2007, also hopes to attract businesses that have never advertised on television. The deal with DirecTV brings Google a pipeline to about 30 million homes.

Google is pushing for a radical television revolution, including the rollout of Google TV.
