Horoscope: Dec. 12

The ability to empathize with others not only makes a person more compassionate, but it also makes for better business. One needs to be able to relate to the customer in order to know what the customer wants and needs. The Pisces moon lends extensive wisdom, insight and powers of empathy to any takers.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’ll be a teacher, but you’re not just showing others how to do something. You’re also showing them how to teach others how to do it. So the bit of instruction you impart will have an amazing ripple effect.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). It isn’t always pretty when justice is served, but things certainly feel more right afterward. Once the rewards and punishments have been dealt, everyone can get a clean start.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Even a social creature like you feels like chilling out at home alone once in a while. This is the perfect day for going into your own private world without feeling the need to explain yourself or even to communicate with anyone else.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You have a deep well of health and happiness inside you. But if the bucket springs a leak or the rope breaks, you won’t be able to dip into that well. Maintain your relationships with care. They are the bucket and the rope.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You may be generous when you speculate about what your loved ones are capable of doing, but you won’t be faulted for that! Anyway, when you state that something is possible, you are almost always right.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Usually, when you treat others right, they will treat you right, too. Unfortunately, the scale of right and wrong is not made up of a standardized system of measurement. Everyone thinks of this differently.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Relationships push you to places you can’t go alone. And though it’s not always comfortable or fun to be there, it’s important to keep developing yourself in this way throughout your entire life.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Just because someone has a good idea doesn’t mean it’s a good idea for you, too. Be wary of signing up for new responsibilities, services or credit. Weigh your options for a few more days.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You don’t have to have an occupation to be of use to the world, but it certainly helps! You’ll be thinking about a job change and figuring out what skills you need in order to move in a new direction.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Though your loved ones depend on your strength, it’s your softness that will endear you to someone’s heart today. You do handle the fragile ones with great tenderness.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Wherever there is an improvement to be made, you are helpful, even if you are not directly responsible or even involved. You radiate good energy toward those who are learning, growing and healing.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Karma will come full circle. Do not fear that the reckoning will be terrible, unless you’ve done something wrong. This should actually be very pleasant, especially if your past deeds have been good.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Dec. 12). You’ll break new ground this year. The adventure begins when you seize an offbeat opportunity next month. A good relationship gets even closer in February. March brings financial risk and reward. You’re able to do something wonderful for the mother figure in your life in May. Travel is favored in October. Pisces and Gemini people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 50, 11, 32, 17 and 40.

FORECAST FOR THE WEEK AHEAD: There is a positive side to every astrological transit -- yes, even a Mercury retrograde. The current one happens at a particularly interesting time. Mercury, the minister of communication, governs things like holiday cards and the planning sessions that determine who is going to bring the mashed potatoes and what time the caroling will start. Mercury also handles the post office, the petty cash and all the day-to-day logistics that go into an office holiday party. Mercury’s current retrograde in Capricorn, the sign of tradition, just about guarantees that there will be moments when things don’t go as planned. Maybe you send a card to the wrong address, or three people bring mashed potatoes and nobody brings gravy. It’s just a hiccup -- no cause for alarm. Similarly, if the plane is late or the luggage is lost, it is not the end of the world. These kinds of mishaps will be the fodder for funny conversations, or they will cause us to slow down and reconsider our plan. Is there a way to say or do things better? The key with a Mercury retrograde is to remain patient, assume nothing and be extremely slow to decide whether each happening is bad luck or good luck. Everything is neutral until you determine which way to go with it.
