BOOKS

Robert Stone Stone spent part of his childhood in an orphanage, was a member of Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters and a journalist in Vietnam. Out of the tempest of those experiences, the writer emerged as an acute profiler of the humor, longing and darkness of the human experience. In his latest collection, the wryly titled “Fun With Problems,” he turns his eye to bored husbands, drug-addled actresses, nervous newlyweds and Silicon Valley executives, to name a handful. Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood. 7 p.m. (310) 659-3110.

POP MUSIC

Alkaline Trio On their seventh studio album, “This Addiction” (out Feb. 23), the Chicago-bred pioneers of emo relapse to their witty, gritty punk roots with a stripped down sound and bleed-out lyrics. Indie punks Cursive open for them. Glass House. 200 W. 2nd St., Pomona. 6:30 pm. $21 in advance, $24 at the door. (909) 865-3802.

Princeton The chipper indie-pop group sports one of the rarer front person combos in music -- identical twin singers. The filial chemistry is palpable in their sweet-tempered harmonies and melodies, backed by a jangly take on ‘90s college rock. Spaceland, 1717 Silverlake Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. Free. www.clubspaceland.com.
