Venice remodel draws comments and questions

Share

The Jan. 16 Home cover story on Scott and Sharonne Trattner’s remodel in Venice prompted a string of e-mails and comments on the L.A. at Home blog. Though the article focused on how architect Talbot McLanahan transformed a 900-square-foot cottage into a 1,600-square-foot family home, readers had many questions about the couple’s contemporary — and often inexpensive — interior decor. Here are some answers:

Nicole Ward of Los Angeles asked: Where did the Trattners get those gorgeous chairs in their dining room? The couple say they found the seating — six of Mies van der Rohe’s MR10 tubular steel side chairs, a design that dates to 1927 — through the online auction site 1stdibs.com.

What about the pendant lamp hanging over the dining table? It’s called the Fun 1DA Pendant, a classic by Danish designer Verner Panton, and it can be special-ordered ($1,250) through Ylighting.com.

And the unusual mirrors in the same room? Turns out they’re from local flea markets.

Another reader asked about the black-and-white geometric rug in the corridor connecting the original wing of the house with the modern addition in back. The Trattners’ report that the rug was an inexpensive buy from IKEA. Though the store no longer carries the exact design, it does stock rugs that are similar in size and spirit.

Maria von Hartz of Los Angeles asked about the undeniably modern curtain rods and “hold backs” in the living room. The hardware is from the Bradley Collection, bradleycollection.com.

And what would a follow-up Q&A be without the question, “Who was their contractor?” Answer: Glenn Lyons, (310) 452-9500.
