MOVIES

Doug Benson’s I Love Movies The stand-up comedian behind “Super High Me” aims his scabrous wit at the silver screen with this live monthly podcast in celebration of all things celluloid. Previous guests have included Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, Jon Hamm and Paul F. Tompkins. Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, 5919 Franklin Ave., L.A. 7:30 p.m. Free. (323) 908-8702. losangeles.ucbtheatre.com.

Harry Smith: The Avant-Garde in the American Vernacular With an eclectic mix of accomplishments and incarnations -- notably his widely influential 1952 “Anthology of American Folk Music” and pioneering work in experimental film -- Harry Smith (1923-91) was as much zeitgeist as cipher. A new book seeks to put the man in context of the artistic traditions he loved and the movements he sparked. On hand for a signing will be the book’s editor and director of the Getty’s Harry Smith Archives, Rani Singh; deputy director of the Getty Research Institute Andrew Perchuk; and musical guest Jim Kweskin. 7 p.m. Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood. Free. (310) 659-3110. www.booksoup.com.

POP MUSIC

Olin & the Moon The band name sounds like some long-lost children’s picture book, but make no mistake -- this band of Eastside louts makes jubilant country music fit for spitting whiskey in someone’s eye for the crime of looking at you sideways. Live shows usually devolve into gang choruses, rowdiness and waking up next to someone you never intended to. They hold down a residency all month at the Echo. 1822 Sunset Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. Free. www.attheecho.com.
