On the SAG Awards red carpet, there’s more than a splash of color
From Lea Michele’s emerald-green Malandrino gown to Diane Kruger’s mustard-yellow Jason Wu; from Anna Kendrick’s purple Alberta Ferretti bustier gown, to Carey Mulligan’s raspberry strapless Lanvin worn with a crystal brooch at the waist, the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards was a rainbow of color.
But the best looks were more notable for having an interesting structure and silhouette than for their hue.
Drew Barrymore, this award season’s most fearless fashionista, didn’t disappoint. Her dramatic strapless royal-blue tulle Monique Lhuillier gown, with a structured trumpet skirt trimmed in ribbons and beads, was befitting of Hollywood royalty.
She had one of the evening’s many untidy updos, and a nude lip. The makeup may not have measured up to the glamour of the gown -- Adam Lambert’s was prettier.
Kate Hudson’s slinky white jersey Emilio Pucci gown looked demure from the front, but was Jennifer Lopez-low in back, with crystal embroidery at the side. The tassel necklace, worn in the back, was a great touch.
Marion Cotillard stood out by going with a short cocktail dress instead of the typical floor-sweeper. Her beaded and floral embroidered white Elie Saab Couture dress with a single structured shoulder and a feathery hem was lighthearted and modern, if a little over-embellished.
Penelope Cruz’s dress, by stylist-designer L’Wren Scott, hit at the knee. Covered in black beads with black beaded fringe at the shoulders, it was sophisticated and not overdone.
As for the men, well, the beard seems to be the accessory of the award season. Justin Timberlake, “Mad Men’s” Jon Hamm and John Slattery, and “Inglourious Basterds’ ” Christoph Waltz were among the hirsute.
Timberlake was the best dressed, though, wearing a black Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo and bow tie, and a ruffled pleat shirt in an unexpected denim blue.
He’s one man who can rock the ruffle.
