Lindsey Vonn reaches World Cup milestone

Staff And Wire Reports

In three weeks, the only things that will matter for Lindsey Vonn will be gold, silver or bronze.

Saturday, however, was a day for milestones.

Vonn made it five wins in five downhills this season. Her 30th World Cup victory, at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, tied her with Croatia’s Janica Kostelic for eighth place on the career list and put her nearly halfway to Austrian leader Annemarie Moser-Proell’s 62 wins.

“It’s crazy! When she was dominating the World Cup, I thought she was unbeatable,” Vonn said, referring to Kostelic. “She was so good -- too good -- and I don’t really see myself as the person that’s got the same amount of wins that she has. She is just as big a legend in ski racing as Moser-Proell or [Renate] Goetschl. She’s a huge name.”

Goetschl is third on the list at 46 and holds the record for wins at one venue -- 10 in Cortina. Vonn also won Friday’s super-G and now has three victories at the most prestigious stop on the women’s circuit.

Carolina Kostner of Italy won her third gold medal at the European figure skating championships at Tallinn, Estonia.

Dodgers to play exhibitions in Taiwan

It’s official: The Dodgers are headed to Taiwan.

Not all of them, of course. But Major League Baseball confirmed Saturday that the Dodgers will send a split squad to Taiwan for exhibition games March 13 and 14. The Dodgers have yet to determine which players will make the trip, though their two Taiwanese players -- pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo and infielder Chin-lung Hu -- are expected to be among them.

The Dodgers visited mainland China for two exhibition games in 2008, along with the San Diego Padres. No major league team will join the Dodgers this time. Instead, the Dodgers will play against an unspecified team from the Taiwanese league.

-- Bill Shaikin The Baltimore Orioles and Miguel Tejada are headed toward a reunion. This time, however, Tejada will play third base instead of shortstop.

Tejada and the Orioles have agreed on a one-year contract, according to a team official familiar with the deal. The person spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract hinges upon Tejada’s passing a physical, which has not yet been given.

Tejada played shortstop with the Orioles from 2004 through 2007 before being traded to the Houston Astros for five players.

Cesar Izturis played deftly in the field at shortstop with Baltimore last year and is expected to retain his starting position.

Hawaiian Brian Viloria was taken to a hospital because of apparent exhaustion soon after his TKO defeat by Colombia’s Carlos Tamara in Saturday’s IBF light-flyweight title fight in Manila, a boxing official said.

Referee Bruce McTavish stopped the fight 1 minute 45 seconds into the 12th and final round.

Soon after the bout ended, Viloria was taken from his locker room and rushed to a hospital in an ambulance.

Viloria was later transferred to Makati Medical Center for more tests, including a brain scan, said Nasser Cruz, head of the boxing division of the Philippine Games and Amusement Board.

Doctors at the hospital found nothing wrong with Viloria after he underwent neck and chest X-rays and a brain CT scan, Cruz said.

Tom Watson birdied six holes on the back nine for a nine-under-par 66 and a two-stroke lead over Fred Couples after the second round of the Champions Tour’s season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.

The 60-year-old Watson, coming off a win with Jack Nicklaus in the Champions Skins at Kaanapali, overcame a rocky start and finished with nine birdies and three bogeys for a 15-under 129 total.
