POP MUSIC

Gogol Bordello The gypsy-thrash band makes a real play for pop success on its new Rick Rubin-produced album, “Trans-Continental Hustle.” Eugene Hütz’s manic cackling has been refined into a real vessel for his songs, but he hasn’t lost an ounce of his crowd-surfing, guitar-destroying, carnival barker charisma. The Mayan, 1038 S. Hill St., L.A. Monday and Tuesday, 8 p.m. https://www.clubmayan.com.

BOOKS

Peter Beinart As America has gained power and influence, the way it has wielded that power and influence has earned it both staunch advocates and equally persistent critics. Beinart, journalist and author of “The Icarus Syndrome: A History of American Hubris,” will discuss America’s foreign policy from World War I to the present, asking, “Why does success produce hubris, and can tragedy produce wisdom?” Zócalo Public Square at the Actors’ Gang, 9070 Venice Blvd., Culver City. 7:30 pm. Free, with reservations. www.zocalopublicsquare.org.
