Need to know: Impressionism shows at De Young Museum in San Francisco

Share

If Paris is out of reach, you can catch the vibe closer to home. The De Young Museum in San Francisco opens the first of two shows this month featuring masterpieces from the famed Musée d’Orsay. The first show, “Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces From the Musée d’Orsay,” presents 100 works by such masters as Édouard Manet and Claude Monet. The show, which was to open Saturday, runs through Sept. 6. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for children 6 to 17; free for children 5 and younger. The second show, “Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne and Beyond: Post-Impressionist Masterpieces From the Musée d’Orsay,” continues the artistic arc with 120 pieces in the later Impressionist era. The show runs Sept. 25-Jan. 18. The Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park will open a special exhibition that lends context to the De Young exhibitions called “Impressionist Paris: City of Light” from June 5-Sept. 26. The show has 150 pieces, including photos, prints and paintings. Tickets from the De Young shows get you into the Legion of Honor show on the same day for free. Don’t wait to book at High Sierra Camps

Yosemite’s hike-in High Sierra Camps are so sought-after that the pickings can be slim for travelers who wait to book overnight stays during the short summer season. The good news: If you stay two consecutive nights at Merced Lake Camp (with dinner and breakfast daily), the park concessionaire will throw in the third night — a $153 (plus tax) savings. Merced Lake Camp boasts more cabins than the other High Sierra Camps. It has a good inventory in July and August; its two nearest neighbors, Sunrise and Vogelsang, are sold out for the season. The bad news: The Merced camp is a long walk. Count on 14.6 miles by the shortest route from Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Road. Check availability online https://www.yosemitepark.com/Accommodations_HighSierraCamps_Availability.aspx or call (801) 559-4909.

Day voyages to see sea lion and seal rookeries

The double-masted schooner called the Bill of Rights will begin daylong sailings this summer to view sea lion and seal rookeries as well as the rocky beauty of Anacapa Island. Island Packers, which operates service to islands in Channel Islands National Park, adds six-hour rides aboard the 137-foot ship on June 12, July 17, Aug. 21 and Sept. 11. On this route, the tall ship heads out from Channel Islands Harbor to Anacapa, where passengers are likely to see pods of dolphins along the way as well as seals and sea lions with their pups in the cliffs at the base of the island. The tall ship doesn’t land on the island, but sails past Arch Rock on the eastern end of Anacapa and then to the back of the island before returning to the harbor. Tickets cost $65 for adults and $55 for children 12 and younger. Info: Island Packers, (805) 642-1393, https://www.islandpackers.com.
