Dan Hawkins said to be out as coach at Colorado

Share

Multiple media outlets are reporting that embattled Colorado Coach Dan Hawkins will be fired Tuesday.

Hawkins has been on the hot seat since last year. The cries for his ouster grew louder following the biggest collapse in school history Saturday when the Buffaloes (3-6) blew a 28-point lead at Kansas with less than 12 minutes left and lost, 52-45.

It was the 17th loss in a row outside Colorado for Hawkins, who is 19-39 in five seasons in Boulder.

A school spokesman said he couldn’t confirm the TV and newspaper reports that Athletic Director Mike Bohn would replace Hawkins with associate coach Brian Cabral for the final three games. Bohn didn’t return messages Monday night and Hawkins didn’t respond to a text message from The Associated Press.

Woodward sorry

Washington Athletic Director Scott Woodward issued an apology and clarification for comments he made about Oregon over the weekend.

During Washington’s pregame radio show on Saturday, Woodward said Oregon as an academic institution has became “an embarrassment.” He told KJR-AM that the growth of the Ducks athletically has come at the expense of their academic standing.

Woodward attempted to clarify his comments Monday, apologizing if his comments were found as “critical or insulting” to Oregon. He says he has great respect for Oregon as an institution and athletic program, but that Oregon is “a great example of the struggles which can accompany a university when state funding decreases.”

Oregon, the top-ranked team in the nation, defeated Washington, 53-16.

Connecticut player arrested

Connecticut defensive end Marcus Campbell, who was suspended from the team last week, has been arrested.

Connecticut’s student newspaper, the Daily Campus, was first to report that the 22-year-old Campbell was picked up by police on campus Monday morning and charged with fifth-degree larceny.

The arrest follows an investigation into the Sept. 29 theft of a backpack that contained a laptop computer and other items valued at $876, according to a campus police report.

The junior, who sat out the 2009 season because of academic issues, has played in 23 games for Connecticut. He had been expected to start this season but tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during practice in August and had season-ending surgery. He was suspended last week for an unspecified violation of team rules.

Easley still with Gators

Florida Coach Urban Meyer says defensive tackle Dominique Easley is still with the team despite not being on the travel roster last weekend. Easley, a 280-pound freshman from Staten Island, N.Y., and one of the top recruits in the nation last year, didn’t travel with the Gators to Vanderbilt.

His absence stirred speculation he might transfer, especially since he walked out of practice in August and talked about playing significant snaps this season.

Etc.

Wisconsin Coach Bret Bielema said running back John Clay was questionable for Saturday’s game against Indiana because of a sprained right knee even though tests came back negative. … Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros expects to start Saturday against West Virginia after his left knee improved “immensely,” according to Coach Butch Jones. … Arkansas cornerback Ramon Broadway will probably miss the rest of the season after suffering a dislocated ankle Saturday in a win over South Carolina. … Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson should be ready to play Saturday against Purdue, Coach Rich Rodriguez said. Robinson was knocked out of last week’s 67-65 triple-overtime win against Illinois, leaving the game with a headache and dizziness. … Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini says he expects Taylor Martinez to be the starting quarterback against Kansas this week. Martinez was on the sideline for the No. 9 Cornhuskers’ 31-30 overtime victory at Iowa State on Saturday because of an ankle sprain he suffered a week earlier against Missouri.
