Loyola Marymount wins easily over La Sierra
Four Loyola Marymount players scored in double figures Sunday to lead the Lions past La Sierra, 100-62.
Drew Viney led Loyola Marymount (1-1) with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Ashley Hamilton scored 12 points for the Lions, with Ayodeji Egbeyemi and Larry Davis adding 10 each.
The Lions, who led 51-25 at halftime, bounced back from an 81-79 home loss to Morgan State on Friday night.
Godwin Okonji grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lions, who held a 52-26 edge on the boards, including 20 on the offensive glass. It was Loyola Marymount’s highest rebounding total since getting 54 in a 2001 game against UNLV.
Lavel Pickett led La Sierra, an NAIA school from Riverside, with 15 points.
The Lions made 33 of 43 free throws, with 11 players getting at least a point from the foul line.
at Oregon 72, UC Santa Barbara 70: Joevan Catron had 15 points and Oregon held UC Santa Barbara scoreless in the final 2:28 in the BTI Invitational. Oregon went up 71-70 with 2:08 to play on a basket by Catron inside, and then made defensive stops on three straight possessions by the Gauchos. Catron added a free throw with 1.1 seconds left and the Ducks knocked away a long inbound pass intended for Orlando Johnson as time expired. Malcolm Armstead also had 12 points and seven assists for Oregon, which improved to 3-0 under new coach Dana Altman. E.J. Singler added 11 points and Teondre Williams and Tyrone Nared scored 10 each. James Nunnally led Santa Barbara (1-2) with 28 points and Johnson finished with 24.
Cal State Bakersfield 80, at Sacramento State 78 (OT): Alex Johnson made a three-point shot with 20 seconds left in overtime to give the Roadrunners the victory in their season opener. Johnson led all scorers with 22 points. Alpha N’Diaye led Sacramento State with 16.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 76, at Seattle 70: David Hanson had 22 points, Will Donahue added 16 points and 10 rebounds and the Mustangs pulled away down the stretch. SLO Coach Joe Callero was making his first trip back to Seattle since leaving the Redhawks before their return to Division I a season ago.
WOMEN
at UCLA 66, UC Santa Barbara 52: The Bruins (2-0) turned up the defensive pressure to defeat the Gauchos. UCLA forced 23 turnovers, with players recording 14 steals. “That’s our game plan every time. We feed off turnovers,” said Jasmine Dixon, who was one of four Bruins in double figures with 12 points. Emilie Johnson led the Gauchos (0-2) with 14 points.
