Sierra Summit, now called China Peak, expands ski facilities
Sierra Summit resort in California has reclaimed its old name, China Peak, and opened for the 2010-2011 ski and snowboard season with new ownership and new and renovated facilities.
The resort, in the Sierra Nevada mountains between Yosemite and Sequoia-Kings Canyon national parks, opened as China Peak in 1958 and then changed its name to Sierra Summit in 1982. Topping out at 8,700 feet, it offers a vertical rise of 1,700 feet and is equipped with 11 lifts, resort owner Tim Cohee said.
With the dusting off of the old name have come spruced-up restaurants, bars and rental shops. Beginner skiers and riders now get their own rental center, terrain and ski lift. A snowboard park is expected to open next month; the date depends on the weather, said Cohee, formerly with Kirkwood Mountain Resort in the Lake Tahoe area.
The resort’s China Peak Inn, across a creek from the slopes, underwent extensive renovations too. Rates for Sunday through Thursday stays (except holiday periods) start at $99 for an economy room (which includes one lift ticket) and $149 for a standard room (which includes two lift tickets). Adult lift tickets normally cost $59 per day.
The resort is about 70 miles northeast of Fresno on the south shore of Huntington Lake.
