Sugary sports drinks good for you? Teens should think again; a new app might help

In a study of middle and high school students in Texas, children who got the message to eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise regularly apparently got another message -- that sugary sports drinks are part of a healthy lifestyle, according to a study published in Pediatrics in September by the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

The study found that kids with healthy habits thought flavored and sports beverages “were consistent with a healthy lifestyle,” the study said. For the full report, read “Dietary and Activity Correlates of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption Among Adolescents.”

Two students at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. might have an app for that. They won a national award for developing a healthy eating app aimed at teens, the Hartford Courant reports, in “Trinity students win contest with app to fight child obesity.”
