Bono and the Edge revealed as investors in Dropbox

Share

We already knew that Dropbox had an all-star lineup of investors.

Now the hot San Francisco startup revealed in a tweet two more: Bono and the Edge, the singer and lead guitarist of the rock band U2. The pair apparently took part in Dropbox’s $250 million funding round last year that valued the company at $4 billion.

This was the first time that Bono was identified as an individual investor in a tech company, but he’s no novice tech investor. He’s a co-founder and managing partner in Elevation Partners, which has sunk money into Facebook and Yelp and is raising a new $1 billion fund. Dropbox hooked up with the U2 band members through entrepreneur brothers Ali and Hadi Partovi, advisers and investors in Dropbox who met Bono while working on their music app iLike.

Looks like Dropbox co-founder and Chief Executive Drew Houston found what he was looking for. A guitarist who jams with other Dropbox musicians on Friday nights, he’s as passionate about music as he is about Dropbox. He used to play ‘90s covers with an alternative rock band Angry Flannel in Boston. He originally dubbed his company “Even Flow” after one of his favorite Pearl Jam tunes and, with Salesforce.com’s Marc Benioff, met Eddie Vedder backstage at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit in 2010.

Houston and Dropbox co-founder Arash Ferdowsi often take the Dropbox gang to a local karaoke bar where they have been known to belt out a duet: Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe.”
