Southern California gasoline prices drop for third straight week
It’s not much relief, but Southern California gasoline prices dropped for the third week in a row as the pain at the pump continued to rise in many other parts of the nation. That’s according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s weekly Weekend Gas Watch.
The maddening thing for motorists, of course, is how price declines seem to happen so slowly while price increases seem to leap ahead at alarming rates.
“Given the big wholesale fuel price declines in California, it’s unclear why we aren’t seeing more significant price drops at the pump,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “This time last year, we were paying about a quarter less per gallon.”
The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $4.314 per gallon, which is 4.4 cents less than last week and 6.1 cents lower than last month. Unfortunately, that’s still 24 cents a gallon higher than last year.
In San Diego, the current average price of $4.304, is a drop of 3.1 cents since last week. It’s also 6.8 cents lower than last month, but 24 cents a gallon higher than a year ago.
On the Central Coast, the average price is $4.36 a gallon, down 4.5 cents from last week. That’s also 5.8 cents lower than a month ago but 24 cents higher than last year.
In the Inland Empire counties, the average per gallon price is $4.304, down 3.6 cents from last week. That’s also 5.5 cents lower than last month, but 25 cents more than last year.
The national average for gallon of gasoline rose again overnight by 0.8 cents to $3.936. That’s a 16.9 cents a gallon increase since last month.
The Weekend Gas Watch uses data collected by the Oil Price Information Service and by Wright Express. It is compiled from daily receipts collected from more than 100,000 retail outlets across the U.S.
