Windows 8 coming in October, Microsoft confirms

Microsoft finally confirmed what many observers had been predicting for a long time: Windows 8 is launching in October.

The Redmond, Wash., tech company confirmed that Windows 8, the next version of its operating system, will have its mass-market release in October, but it failed to give a specific date for the launch.

The company made the announcement at its Worldwide Partners Conference in Toronto, according to the Associated Press.

The release confirmation also gives a better indication of when Microsoft may launch some of its other products.

The launch of Windows Phone 8 is expected to coincide with Windows 8, and that could mean at least one smartphone running the company’s next mobile operating system may launch in the same month.

Microsoft also said its Surface tablet, which it revealed last month, would launch in time with Windows 8, so an October launch for the Surface would not be surprising at this point.

And the Surface may not be the only Windows 8 tablet. Last week, news broke that Samsung may also be working on a Windows 8 tablet that is expected to launch along with the release of Windows 8.

Clearly, some important details still need to be announced, but a confirmed release month for Windows 8 is welcome news.
