How to maximize your social media impact: Timing is everything

Share

Thanks to Bitly, the popular link-shortening service, we can add another tool to our arsenal of tricks to get noticed on social media.

Timing our tweets, and Facebook and Tumblr posts right.

Researchers at Bitly have put together data that show that for each of the top three social media networks -- Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr -- there are optimal times for posting links to maximize click-through, and times when you might as well be posting into a vacuum.

They also found that the optimal time differs, depending on the social media site.

Got something you want to say on Twitter? Tweet it between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. EST Monday through Thursday for the greatest chance of click-through.

Nights are slower on Twitter, so tweeting after 8 p.m. won’t get you much attention. Fridays after 3 p.m. are also bad, and the weekends are all but dead.

The peak time for posting to Facebook is Wednesday at 3 p.m. But in general, posts that go up on the site at midday have the best chance of getting read.

Anything posted after 8 p.m. and before 8 a.m. has difficulty getting high amounts of attention. Weekends are also bad.

Tumblr is a different story. Bitly found that Tumblr readers are most active at night. If you want your post to get attention on this site, you’ll want to wait until at least 4 p.m. to post. And Friday evenings, a no-man’s land on the other sites, is a perfect time to post on Tumblr.
