It’s frightening enough to face one’s retirement without sufficient money to maintain one’s lifestyle, but an even scarier prospect looms for millions of Americans: outliving one’s assets as one ages.

The AARP has compiled plenty of data on the financial pressures confronting America’s retirees as they grow older. Among other things, they’re carrying more credit-card debt than before, their home foreclosure rates are rising faster than any other segment of the public, and they’re especially vulnerable to market collapses, such as the crash of 2008.
What’s the good news? Social Security has been a lifeline. But that tells you how irresponsible it is to talk about cutting Social Security benefits today.
