A Moorish fantasy in Irvine’s Shady Canyon

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

THE Alhambra in Granada, Spain -- a palace-turned-museum revered for its architecture -- was the inspiration for this newly built estate in the heart of Shady Canyon, the Irvine home of sports stars Mark McGwire and Lindsay Davenport and sports-show host Jim Rome.

Borrowing from the Alhambra’s use of arches, loggias and pools, Rob Glass and his design-build team created the two-story Moroccan/Moorish-style Castillo del Cañón

About this house: Glass is known for bringing style opposites together. At the Castillo, the architectural design and interiors team of Glass Construction Corp. -- with exterior work by David Hohmann and Peter Brandow & Associates -- brought a sense of instant history to new construction by using antique and exotic materials. But the house also has such modern amenities as a state-of-the-art home theater, a climate-controlled wine room, wireless Internet and floor heating system.

Asking price: $9.3 million.

Size: Seven bedrooms, 11 bathrooms in under 10,000 square feet on a street-to-street lot across from a land preserve.

Features: There are Moroccan limestone floors, 11-foot ceilings, an interior courtyard, an arabesque-arched loggia, distressed oak plank floors and a four-car garage. The kitchen suite includes a walk-in pantry and a breakfast room. The swimming pool has a Moorish-style cabana with an outdoor fireplace and kitchen. The home also has golf-course, city-light and canyon views.

Where: Shady Canyon, Irvine. The guard-gated community has a country club, a Tom Fazio-designed golf course, a swim club, tennis courts, hiking and biking trails, parks and playgrounds.
