Install an iron railing

Share
Do It Yourself or Not?

The front porch of many homes is more accessible with the addition of an ornamental iron railing to provide sure footing. A fresh coat of primer and paint can revive an old railing, but when the railing or posts are unstable and weathered beyond repair they’re not secure and should be replaced.

You’ll find precut railing sections and components sold at lumber yards and home centers. For a custom railing, contact a fence company or use a search engine to find “iron railings” in your area. When you’re planning the project, it’s a good idea to check the local building codes regarding railing height and spindle spacing requirements so yours will comply.

A fence contractor will charge $1,050 for labor and material to remove and replace two 5-foot sections of angled ornamental iron stair railing. You can order the railing, posts and installation hardware for $750 and do it yourself, saving 29 percent for your effort. The cost is considerably higher if the iron railing is a more ornate style or cut to a custom size.

To do the installation, you will need basic carpentry tools such as a screwdriver, a carpenter’s level, an adjustable angle, a tape measure, an electric drill, a masonry bit, a screwdriver, pliers, a hammer, a wrench and a hacksaw. The posts are installed first, and then the railing sections are bolted to them.
