Oops: Google does it again, accidentally reveals upcoming Nexus 5

If there was any doubt that Google is getting ready to release a new Nexus phone, the tech giant has put it to rest by prematurely revealing it on its own website.

For a brief time Thursday night, the Google Play website accidentally displayed the Nexus 5 in place of its predecessor, the Nexus 4. The gaff was nothing more than a small thumbnail, but it was enough to confirm that the Nexus 5 is coming soon and what it’s price will be.

According to screenshots of the leak, the Nexus 5 will start at $349 for a 16-gigabyte model without contract. That’s more than the Nexus 4’s base price last year -- it started at $299 for an 8-GB model -- but it is still a very low price for a phone with no carrier subsidies.

“Capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways,” the Nexus 5’s Google Play description read.

Google could not be reached for comment, but this isn’t the first time something like this has happened.

Earlier this year, Google posted a video teasing an upcoming version of the Android operating system, and in the video, a Google employee could be seen with a device that fans hadn’t seen before. Viewers quickly realized the phone was likely the Nexus 5, and shortly after, Google took down the Android 4.4 video.

And it isn’t just Google that has inadvertently disclosed details of the Nexus 5.

The Federal Communications Commission approved and posted images many believe are of the Nexus 5. Someone also left a Nexus 5 at a bar and a video of it was quickly filmed and posted on YouTube. And just this week, what appears to be official press images of the Nexus 5 were leaked from Canadian carrier Telus.

Meanwhile, chocolate snack KitKat -- which Android 4.4 is named after -- has been posting cryptic messages in its tweets that seem to indicate the next version of Android and the Nexus 5 will be released on Oct. 28.
